Paul Heaton - The Cross Eyed Rambler (2008)

THE over-polished arrangements of his previous band The Beautiful South have been consigned to history and Paul Heaton has convened a Manc band which includes ex-Fall guitarist Steve Trafford as co-writer.

The Heaton flair for a blithe melody and a bilious lyric is still present and correct, and it's intriguing to hear it applied to a song like The Pub, featuring a truly gruesome guitar riff.

Elsewhere, the moral corruption of the USA gets a thorough duffing-up, and all the woes of modern life are collected together and splurged across Everything Is Everything, a protest song about. Well... everything. Good work, feller.
